Composite insulators, also known as polymer insulators, are advanced components for power transmission and distribution systems, featuring a lightweight, high-performance design. Unlike traditional glass or porcelain insulators, they consist of three core parts: a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) rod (providing mechanical strength and insulation), silicone rubber sheds (offering anti-pollution and hydrophobic properties), and metal end fittings (connecting to conductors and towers).​

Their key advantages include exceptional hydrophobicity—silicone rubber sheds repel water, preventing pollution flashover in coastal, industrial, or high-humidity areas. Weighing 70%–80% less than porcelain insulators, they simplify transportation and installation, especially in remote or mountainous regions. They also resist breakage from impact or thermal shock, with a wide operating temperature range of -60°C to +120°C.​

Common applications span medium-voltage (MV) to ultra-high-voltage (UHV) grids, offshore wind farms, and high-speed rail traction systems. With a service life of 20–25 years and low maintenance needs (no frequent cleaning), they balance reliability and cost-effectiveness, making them a vital choice for modern, resilient power infrastructure.

The main structure of the composite insulator is generally composed of three parts: shed sheath, glass fiber and end fittings. The shed sheath is generally made of high temperature vulcanized silicone rubber material, the fiber is generally a glass fiber reinforced plastic composite material with glass fiber as the reinforcing material and epoxy resin as the matrix; the end fittings are generally carbon cast steel or carbon structural steel with hot-dip galvanized coating on the outer surface. The fiber and the shed sheath bear the mechanical and electrical loads respectively, thus combining the advantages of the superior atmospheric aging resistance of the shed sheath material and the good tensile mechanical properties of the fiber material. Silicone rubber is currently the best material for composite insulator shed group sheaths, and its unique hydrophobic migration performance is the key to successful use of silicone rubber in polluted areas.
